July Birthstone

Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health and wisdom.

I thought I would share a few facts about these precious stones

Rubies and sapphires are different coloured varieties of the mineral corundum. All other colours except for red are normally referred to as sapphires.

Rubies have historically been mined in Thailand, the Pailin and Samlout District of Cambodia, Burma, India, Afghanistan, Australia, Namibia, Colombia, Japan, Scotland, Brazil and in Pakistan. In Sri Lanka, lighter shades of rubies (often “pink sapphires”) are more commonly found.

The word ruby comes from ruber, Latin for red. The colour of a ruby is due to the element chromium.

Rubies are traditionally considered a precious stone, along with sapphires, emeralds and diamonds. Similar to these other stones their value varies depending on their clarity and colour, and a perfect stone can be hugely expensive.

And finally a little bit of heresay!

According to astrology generally rubies should be worn on the ring finger of the right hand. For good astrological effects, one should wear your ruby on Sunday morning between 5 am to 7 am during shukla puksha days.

That leaves me to wish all of you celebrating your birthday in July "Many Happy Returns" and belated greetings to those of you I have already missed X
